How to use headsets for Interpret
Using headsets with the Interpret tool allows both you and your client to communicate seamlessly through real-time audio translation. Follow this guide to set up your hardware, adjust your audio settings, and run an interpreted session using Beam Notes.
1. Hardware Overview & Setup
Your headset package includes two pairs of headsets and an audio splitter.
Connect the headsets: Plug both headsets firmly into the splitter. Ensure both sets are connected equally to allow dual audio input and output.
Identify cable colours: Headset cables may be colour-coded. While either colour works for either user, assigned colours help you track which headset is yours and which is used by clients for cleaning between sessions.
Check inline controls: If your splitter features an inline control pod (with mute and volume buttons), verify that the microphone is unmuted. A red light indicates the mic is muted. Unmute it so the system can capture both speakers.
Plug into your computer: Connect the main splitter cable to your computer using the USB connector or AUX cable. Use a USB adapter if your device lacks an AUX port.
2. Configuring Audio Settings
Before launching Interpret, verify that your computer directs both input and output through the headset assembly.
Open your computer's Audio/Sound Settings.
Set the Audio Input (Microphone) to the connected headset device.
Set the Audio Output (Speakers/Headphones) to the connected headset device.
Confirm sound is routing to the headsets rather than your computer’s built-in speakers or microphone.
3. Running an Interpret Session
Distribute equipment: Put on one headset and give the second headset to the client.
Open Beam Notes: Navigate to your Beam Notes page and access the Interpret tool.
-
Configure session details:
Enter your name.
Enter the client's name.
Select the primary language for each speaker.
Start interpreting: Click Start Interpreting.
-
Conduct the conversation: Speak into the headset taking turns. Pause after each segment to allow the automated interpretation to complete. You will hear the translation in your headset and see the transcript on your screen.
Optional: If you prefer reading the transcript without audio playback, click the Mute button in the interface.
Save and edit: Click Save when finished. The session will automatically convert into a standard Beam Note summary, which you can customise and edit as needed.
